The magnetic stirrer is a device that uses a rotating magnetic field to induce the rapid rotation of a special stirring bar (magnet) resulting in the stirring of the liquid. The rotating field can be created by the rotating magnet or by a group of stationary electromagnets located under a container with the liquid.
Given that glass minimally affects magnetic fields, the magnetic stirrer works well with this type of container.
However, due to the small size of the stirring bar, this device can be used for samples up to four (4) liters. It also encounters problems with high viscosity samples due to its operating philosophy.
These devices can usually accommodate containers of up to 20 liters or have multiple slots for smaller containers. They can achieve speeds of up to 1,500 revolutions per minute, and there is the possibility of simultaneous heating operation.
