IVC
Individually ventilated cages (IVC) are the modern response to the demand for the creation of a space that provides protection from infectious agents, both for sensitive laboratory animals (bio-exclusion) and for the handlers and the environment (bio-containment). With the IVC, a barrier is now created not at the room level (a very demanding and expensive approach), but at the cage level.
The central element of the system is the ventilation unit (air handling unit), which filters the incoming air through a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter and then delivers the air to the cages through a special piping system. Similarly, the air that comes from the cages is filtered by the same mechanism and is released, now clean, into the environment. In the cage, the air enters and exits at a very low speed through a special valve located at the top of the cage.
The overall design ensures excellent living conditions for the inhabitants of each cage (TUV certificate).
